That is, not a book in the famous "for Idiots" series, and no heavy reading required. Forwarding positive, and might even make good wallpaper for some:

Re: "Gun Control (not for Idiots)"
This weekend I will be pulling out literally 10 different firearms and shooting them with a few people. In that group of people will be a person whose last words to me were, "I don't think humans should own guns". He is willing to go shooting, though. Any tips?

Yeah. Stand behind him, not beside him.

At least that has been my experience with naysayers after they've experienced it first hand. The only emphasis should be in the beginning of the shoot, is to explain that a firearm is simply a tool. |

1. Firearms are tools. Like a power saw, firearms must be treated with utmost respect and firearm safety is pretty basic. 2. Shooting is lots of fun. Let them know that the human is in full control of a firearm, and that properly working guns do not accidentally discharge. He or she is 100% accountable for the safe use of that gun. Explain "booger hook" and "bang switch". Heck, I know of a Huntington Beach cop whose condition 0 Glock fell out of the helicopter, several hundred feet to the asphalt below. When the patrol cop on the ground got to it, the unfired round was still safely in the chamber. Make sure he/she understands safety rules and indexing the trigger finger before they touch any firearm. Draw a sketch of proper sight-picture. Check if they are right/left eye dominant and right/left handed, and explain how to compensate if they are cross-dominant. Have them aim and dry fire a DA revolver a few times, while you watch closely, so they learn smooth squeeze and a good grip. If using semi-autos, have them load only 1 round into a mag at first, until you are comfortable with their gun handling. Start with the targets close, so they don't get discouraged. Make it fun by using zombie targets, bowling pins, dueling trees, etc. Build up to double/triple taps into the zombies if you're shooting handguns. Watch them like a hawk, never let a safety issue go uncorrected. If you have access to some dueling trees and they seem to be hitting what they aim at, a steel duel would be a great way to end the shooting day. You can give them a handicap, where they get a full mag, and you only get half. If they had fun, take em out for sporting clays the next time. |
Re: "Gun Control (not for Idiots)"
^^Good info. And a .22 can be tremendous fun without costing a lot. Best bang for the buck imo.
